Malala Yousafzai is a Pakistani activist for female education and the youngest Nobel Prize laureate. She is known for her human rights advocacy, especially for the education of women and children in her native Swat Valley, where the local Taliban had banned girls from attending school. Her activism began with a blog for BBC Urdu in 2009 detailing life under the Taliban. In October 2012, she was shot in the head by a Taliban gunman in an assassination attempt but survived. Following her recovery, she co-founded the Malala Fund, an international non-profit organization, to champion the right of every girl to 12 years of free, safe, and quality education. She was jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2014 at the age of 17.
