Rivers Cuomo is an American musician, best known as the lead vocalist, guitarist, and primary songwriter of the rock band Weezer.
He was born on June 13, 1970, in New York City. Cuomo was raised in several Buddhist communities in the northeastern US, living at the Rochester Zen Center in New York and later at an ashram called Yogaville East in Connecticut until about the age of ten, when his family settled in the Storrs/Mansfield area of Connecticut. He was exposed to diverse ideas early on and was later inspired by heavy metal and punk-pop music.
After playing in various bands, including the glam metal band Avant Garde (later renamed Zoom), Cuomo formed Weezer in 1992 in Los Angeles. The band achieved commercial success with their 1994 self-titled debut, "The Blue Album." Cuomo's songwriting is characterized by power pop melodies, quirky lyrics, and emotional vulnerability.
Beyond Weezer, he has released solo work, collaborated with other artists, and pursued academic interests, including earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in English literature from Harvard University in 2006.
Cuomo is married to Kyoko Ito, whom he met in 1997, and they were married in 2006.
