Wouter André "Wally" De Backer, known professionally as Gotye, is a Belgian-born Australian singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and record producer. Born on May 21, 1980, in Bruges, Belgium, he moved to Australia with his family at age two and grew up in Melbourne. Gotye gained worldwide fame with his 2011 hit single "Somebody That I Used to Know" featuring Kimbra, from the album Making Mirrors, which topped charts in multiple countries and won Grammy Awards for Record of the Year and Best Pop Duo/Group Performance in 2013. His music blends indie pop, alternative rock, and experimental elements, often incorporating samples and diverse instruments. Earlier albums include Boardface (2003) and Like Drawing Blood (2006). He co-founded the independent label Spirit of the Wild and has collaborated with acts like The Basics. After his breakout success, Gotye largely stepped back from the spotlight, focusing on other projects including curating music archives and occasional performances.
