He began his acting career as a teenager in 1995 with the film The Near Room and appeared mostly on television until his film career expanded around 2003.

He is widely known for his roles as Professor Charles Xavier in the X-Men film series (beginning with X-Men: First Class), and for his performances in films like Atonement, The Last King of Scotland, and M. Night Shyamalan's thrillers Split and Glass. Other notable credits include Wanted, It Chapter Two, and the voice role of Mr. Tumnus in The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. His early television work included the British comedy-drama Shameless.
