James David Vance (born James Donald Bowman, August 2, 1984) is an American politician, author, attorney, and Marine Corps veteran who is the 50th vice president of the United States, having assumed office in January 2025. A member of the Republican Party, he previously represented Ohio in the U.S. Senate from 2023 to 2025.

Born and raised in Middletown, Ohio, Vance served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 2003 to 2007, including a deployment to the Iraq War. He graduated from Ohio State University and Yale Law School.

Vance gained national attention with his 2016 bestselling memoir, Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis, which chronicles his challenging Appalachian background. After working as a corporate lawyer and venture capitalist, he successfully ran for the U.S. Senate in 2022. He was selected as the vice presidential running mate for Donald Trump in July 2024 and was elected to the office in November 2024. He is characterized as a national conservative and right-wing populist.
