Ling Tan, born Tan Mang Ling on October 9, 1974, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, is a pioneering Malaysian supermodel of Chinese descent who rose to prominence in the 1990s as one of the first Asian faces to dominate global runways. Raised by a taxi driver father and seamstress mother, she attended a Chinese school and is fluent in four Chinese dialects, Malay, and English. Discovered at 20, she debuted in Zang Toi's Spring/Summer 1995 show and quickly became a sought-after walker for designers like Karl Lagerfeld, Yves Saint Laurent, Tom Ford, Chanel, Elie Saab, and Giambattista Valli. Based in New York City, Tan has graced hundreds of fashion shows, posed for iconic photographers including Richard Avedon (featured in the 1997 Pirelli Calendar), and appeared on covers of Vogue editions in Germany, Korea, and Singapore, as well as editorials in U.S., Italian, and Chinese Vogue. She starred in campaigns for L'Oréal alongside models like Yasmin Warsame and Elsa Benítez, and has shared the spotlight with her younger sister, Ein Tan, on Harper's Bazaar Malaysia and Singapore covers. Over nearly three decades, Tan has advocated for greater Asian representation in fashion, emphasizing adaptability, self-care through yoga and meditation, and viewing beauty as inner confidence and artistic expression.
