Mark Carney is a Canadian economist and politician currently serving as the 24th Prime Minister of Canada and leader of the Liberal Party since March 2025.
Before entering elected politics, he had a distinguished career in international finance and public service. He is widely known for his time as the Governor of the Bank of Canada (2008–2013), where he helped guide Canada through the 2008 financial crisis. Following that, he served as the Governor of the Bank of England (2013–2020), becoming the first non-Briton to hold the position.
Carney also served as the United Nations Special Envoy on Climate Action and Finance from 2020. He was born in Fort Smith, Northwest Territories, and holds degrees in economics from Harvard and Oxford University.
