Melanie Adele Martinez is an American singer and songwriter. She was born in Astoria, Queens, and raised in Baldwin, New York. Martinez rose to fame in 2012 after appearing on season 3 of the American television talent show The Voice.
Following her appearance on the show, she signed with Atlantic Records. Her music is generally described as pop, alternative pop, art pop, electropop, and dark pop. She is known for her unique visual style, often featuring two-toned hair and a doll-like aesthetic, which is a significant part of her music videos and live shows.
Martinez's debut studio album, Cry Baby (2015), introduced her main character, Cry Baby, and was commercially successful. She has since released two more albums, K–12 (2019), which was accompanied by a musical film she wrote and directed, and Portals (2023). Her music often explores dark and personal themes through the lens of a whimsical or childlike aesthetic.
