SZA (pronounced SIZ-ah) is the professional name of American singer-songwriter Solána Imani Rowe. She is a highly acclaimed and influential figure in contemporary R&B, particularly known for popularizing the alternative R&B subgenre.
Her music blends elements of R&B, soul, hip-hop, and often incorporates other influences like pop and rock. Her lyrics are known for being diaristic, vulnerable, and exploring themes of sexuality, heartbreak, self-image, and navigating life as a young Black woman.
SZA released her critically acclaimed debut studio album, Ctrl, in 2017, which propelled her to mainstream success. Her second album, SOS (2022), was an even bigger commercial hit, breaking streaming records and featuring her first Billboard Hot 100 number-one single, "Kill Bill." She has won multiple Grammy Awards for her work.
SZA was the first female artist signed to the hip-hop record label Top Dawg Entertainment (TDE). Her stage name is derived from the Supreme Alphabet, with the letters standing for 'Sovereign' or 'Savior,' 'Zig-Zag-Zig' (enlightenment), and 'Allah' (the most high).
