Gerard Way is an American singer, songwriter, musician, and comic book writer.1 He is best known as the lead vocalist and co-founder of the rock band My Chemical Romance, which he started in 2001. The band was active until 2013, reunited in 2019, and continues to perform, including their Long Live The Black Parade tour and headlining the When We Were Young Festival in 2024.
As a solo artist, he released his debut album, Hesitant Alien, in 2014.
In the world of comics, Way is the co-creator and writer of the Eisner Award-winning comic book series The Umbrella Academy, which has been adapted into a popular Netflix series. He also wrote the comic mini-series The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys and is the founder of DC Comics' Young Animal imprint. He graduated from the School of Visual Arts in New York City with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1999, having originally intended to pursue a career in the comic book industry.
Gerard Way was born on April 9, 1977, in Summit, New Jersey, and is the older brother of Mikey Way, the bassist for My Chemical Romance. He is married to Lindsey Ann Ballato, also known as Lyn-Z, the bassist of Mindless Self Indulgence, and they have one child together.
