Issa Rae, born Jo-Issa Rae Diop, is an American actress, writer, director, producer, and web series creator.

She first rose to prominence with her critically acclaimed YouTube web series, The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl, which ran from 2011 to 2013 and led to a New York Times best-selling memoir of the same name.

Rae is widely recognized as the co-creator, co-writer, and star of the hit HBO comedy series Insecure (2016–2021), for which she received multiple nominations for Golden Globe and Primetime Emmy Awards.

As a producer, she has worked on other notable projects, including the HBO comedy series Rap Sht* and the sketch comedy show A Black Lady Sketch Show. Her film credits include The Hate U Give (2018), The Lovebirds (2020), and Barbie (2023).

Rae is a graduate of Stanford University, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in African and African-American Studies. She has also been named one of Time magazine's 100 most influential people in the world multiple times.
