Octavia Spencer is an American actress born on May 25, 1970, in Montgomery, Alabama. She graduated from Auburn University with a bachelor's degree in English. She began her career in the mid-1990s, initially working in local casting for films, before landing small roles in film and television.

Her breakthrough came in 2011 with the film The Help, where she played the outspoken domestic servant Minny Jackson. Her performance earned her an Academy Award, a Golden Globe Award, and a BAFTA Award for Best Supporting Actress.

She is also known for her roles in films such as Fruitvale Station (2013), Hidden Figures (2016), where she played NASA mathematician Dorothy Vaughan and received another Oscar nomination, and The Shape of Water (2017), which earned her a third consecutive Academy Award nomination. She has also starred in films like Ma (2019), Onward (2020), and the television series Truth Be Told.
