Jaleel White is an American actor, comedian, producer, and writer best known for his role as Steve Urkel on the popular sitcom Family Matters (1989–1998).
The character of Steve Urkel was originally intended to be a one-time guest appearance, but he became an instant hit with audiences and White was made a regular cast member. He also played other related characters on the show, including his alter ego Stefan Urquelle.
White began his career as a child actor, appearing in commercials and guest-starring in various television sitcoms. Beyond Family Matters, he was the first American actor to voice the video game character Sonic the Hedgehog in the animated series Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog (also known as Sonic SatAM), and Sonic Underground.
His later work includes roles in films such as Dreamgirls, appearances on TV shows like Boston Legal, and competing on Dancing with the Stars. He graduated from UCLA in 2001 with a degree in film and television.
