K'naan (born Keinan Abdi Warsame in 1978) is a Somali-Canadian musician, rapper, singer, songwriter, and poet. His stage name, K'naan, translates to "traveler" in Somali.
He was born in Mogadishu, Somalia, and spent his childhood navigating the onset of the Somali Civil War before fleeing the country with his family in the early 1990s. After brief stops in the United States, his family settled in Toronto, Ontario, specifically in the Rexdale neighborhood, home to a large Somali diaspora.
