His most widely recognized television role is as the titular character, a professional "fixer" for the wealthy, in the Showtime crime drama series Ray Donovan (2013–2020), a role that earned him multiple Emmy and Golden Globe nominations.

In film, he is known for roles such as the accused murderer Cotton Weary in the Scream trilogy (1996–2000), Victor Creed / Sabretooth in X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009), and his performances in movies like Spotlight (2015), The Manchurian Candidate (2004), and Defiance (2008).
