Mariska Hargitay is an American actress, producer, director, and philanthropist. She is best known for her long-running, Emmy- and Golden Globe-winning role as Captain Olivia Benson on the television drama series, "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" (SVU), a role she has played since 1999. Her character is the longest-running in American primetime drama history.
Beyond her acting career, Hargitay is a dedicated activist and the founder of the Joyful Heart Foundation, which was established in 2004. The foundation's mission is to support survivors of sexual assault, domestic violence, and child abuse.
She is the daughter of actress and sex symbol Jayne Mansfield and former Mr. Universe, Mickey Hargitay. She is married to actor Peter Hermann, and they have three children.
