RM (real name Kim Nam-joon, formerly known as Rap Monster) is a South Korean rapper, songwriter, and record producer. He is best known as the leader and a rapper of the globally popular K-pop group BTS.
Born in 1994, RM started his career in the underground Korean hip-hop scene as a teenager under the name Runch Randa. He joined Big Hit Entertainment (now Big Hit Music) in 2010 and debuted with BTS in 2013.
Known for his lyrical skills, deep voice, and intellectual approach to music, he has been heavily involved in writing and producing much of BTS's discography. He is recognized for his thoughtful lyrics that often deal with themes of self-love, mental health, and social commentary.
He has also released several solo projects, including the mixtapes RM and Mono, and his official solo studio album Indigo in 2022. He has collaborated with various international artists across different genres.
RM is also known for his high academic achievement, having scored in the top 1% of the nation in university entrance exams, and is fluent in English, which he learned largely by watching the American sitcom Friends.
