Charlie Wilson (1933–2010) was an American politician who served as a Democratic U.S. Representative from Texas from 1973 to 1997. He is best known for his leading role in Operation Cyclone, a massive, covert CIA program that provided weapons and funding to the Afghan mujahideen resistance fighters during the Soviet-Afghan War in the 1980s.
Wilson was a colorful and unconventional figure in Washington. Nicknamed "Good Time Charlie," he was famous for his flamboyant lifestyle, which included a fondness for partying, glamorous women, and heavy drinking. Despite his playboy reputation, he was a highly effective lawmaker and a fierce anti-communist.
While serving on the powerful House Appropriations Committee, Wilson used his political leverage to secretly channel hundreds of millions of dollars in military aid to Afghanistan. His efforts, which included securing shoulder-fired Stinger missiles to shoot down Soviet helicopters, are widely credited with helping turn the tide of the war and forcing the Soviet Union to withdraw its troops in 1989.
His life and covert campaign were immortalized in the 2003 book Charlie Wilson's War by George Crile, which was later adapted into a 2007 Hollywood film starring Tom Hanks as Wilson.
