Melanie Jayne Chisholm is an English singer, songwriter, actress, and television personality, widely known by her stage name Melanie C or Mel C. She initially rose to global prominence in the mid-1990s as a member of the iconic pop group, the Spice Girls, where she was nicknamed Sporty Spice due to her signature athletic look and energetic on-stage presence.
The Spice Girls became the best-selling female group of all time, selling over 100 million records worldwide, before entering an indefinite hiatus in 2000, though they have since reunited for successful concert tours.
Melanie C launched a highly successful solo career in 1998 with the duet "When You're Gone" with Bryan Adams. Her 1999 debut solo album, Northern Star, was a commercial hit, selling millions of copies and spawning two UK Number 1 singles: "Never Be the Same Again" (featuring Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes) and "I Turn to You." She is the only female artist to have reached Number 1 on the UK Official Singles Chart as a solo artist, as part of a duo, a quartet, and a quintet.
After leaving Virgin Records in 2004, she founded her own independent label, Red Girl Records, under which she has released the majority of her subsequent albums, exploring genres that blend pop, rock, electronic, and dance music. She has released eight studio albums in total, with a ninth album, Sweat, announced for 2026.
Beyond music, Chisholm has pursued a career in musical theatre, including a critically acclaimed performance in the West End production of Blood Brothers, which earned her an Olivier Award nomination. She has also appeared as a judge and mentor on various international television talent competitions.
