José Tenoch Huerta Mejía (born January 29, 1981) is a prominent Mexican actor, author, and activist known for his work in both Latin American cinema and major Hollywood productions.
Before his breakthrough into global mainstream cinema, Huerta built a prolific career in Mexico and Spain, appearing in over 70 films and television series. He received widespread acclaim and won the prestigious Ariel Award for Best Actor for his role in the film Days of Grace (Días de gracia). Some of his other notable early and mid-career projects include roles in Sin Nombre (2009), Güeros (2014), the survival drama The 33 (2015), and a starring role as Rafael Caro Quintero in Netflix's crime drama series Narcos: Mexico (2018–2020).
Huerta gained massive international recognition when he entered the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Namor in the blockbuster film Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022), a role he is set to reprise in Avengers: Doomsday. His other major film credits include starring in the horror-thriller The Forever Purge (2021) and the literary film adaptation of Pedro Páramo (2024).
Beyond acting, Huerta holds a degree in Communication and Journalism from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). He is a vocal activist against racism, colorism, and discrimination in the film industry and broader society. He champions diverse representation for dark-skinned and Mesoamerican individuals in media and has written the best-selling book Orgullo prieto / Brown Pride to address these social topics.
