John Carpenter is an American filmmaker, composer, and actor widely regarded as a master of the horror, action, and science fiction genres, particularly for his work in the 1970s and 1980s. He is known for often taking on multiple roles in his films, including writer, director, and composer, and for his distinct, minimalist use of synthesizer music in his scores, most famously the iconic theme for Halloween (1978).
His most notable and influential films include Halloween, The Fog, Escape from New York, The Thing, Christine, Big Trouble in Little China, and They Live. Many of his films that were not initial commercial successes have since become highly celebrated cult classics.
