He is best known for his acting roles in:

The 2007 biographical film Control, where he played the lead role of Joy Division frontman Ian Curtis. This performance earned him several awards.

The 2012 film adaptation of Jack Kerouac's novel, On the Road, as protagonist Sal Paradise.

The 2014 film Maleficent and its sequel, Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, where he plays Diaval.

The 2016 film Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, where he portrayed Fitzwilliam Darcy.

Prior to his acting breakthrough, he was the lead singer of the Leeds band 10,000 Things.

He is married to Romanian-German actress Alexandra Maria Lara, whom he met while filming Control. They have one child.
